News and information from the 912 Registry

President's Report

You may not know it.

You can't feel it.

And if somebody didn't tell you about it, you might still not know it.

What is this "it" you ask?

It's all about some very Big Changes within the club.

Let's start out with the biggest and brightest star of our future -It's the WIKI!

"The wiki? I've never heard of a wiki..."

What is a wiki you ask?
Well, it's not some sort of Island Party - nice try.

  • It's a way for the collective masses (our membership) to share technical information.
  • It's a way for the collective masses to add technical information.
  • It's a way for the collective masses to also access quality, up to date technical information.
Where is this wiki?
It's really easy to find.
  1. Just go to the 912bbs.org and log in,
  2. Go to your "Control Panel" and "edit your profile"
  3. Add your membership number to your profile.
  4. Now click on the button on the upper right labeled wiki.
  5. Now you'll need to enter your login and password for the wiki (they are the same as your bbs login and password)
  6. Now your in!

Let's look at what the wiki can do from 3 examples.

Example #1: (the User)

Let's say your working on your 67 912.

It's late Friday night and you are getting ready for the club drive tomorrow.
You happen to be adjusting the float level on your solex carbs for the first time.
You started out thinking you had all the right tools, the workshop manual and so on.

Suddenly you realize your having problems.
The level doesn't stay where you set it.
You keep trying and trying.
It's too late to ask anyone on the bbs. It's too late to call your buddy in Kansas.
You really need to make it to the drive tomorrow.
What do you do?

Go to the wiki!
The wiki has the exact answer you need.

"If the level deviates, first check the float, float adjustment swivel, and the float needle valves to be sure they are working correctly. If those items are working correctly, adjust the float level by resetting the the externally located float level adjustment screw."
Example #2: (the Contributor)

Being technically minded as you are, you go to the wiki and search for the proper way to adjust your generator. You may have done this procedure 100 times. You know how to do it and have developed a systematic approach that ensures the correct tension on the belt.

Doing a simple search on the wiki turns up that the article is not there!
No problem.
You detail your procedure and upload it to the wiki.
You can add pictures, diagrams, and links to other wiki pages or external links.

Now, every member can benefit from your expertise.
You've helped the club and the 912 community to be a better place.
Kudos to you!

Example #3: (the Editor)

You happen to be searching the wiki for a technical procedure.
You find the article you were looking for and in reading it you find a couple of grammatical errors, spelling errors, and a reference to a tool that doesn't exist anymore.

As a matter of fact, the tool has been replaced by an even better tool that does a much better job.

Every page on the wiki can be edited by every member regardless of who created that page.
Read that again.

That means an obsolete article can be "fixed" and updated at any time, by anybody, to provide constant up to the minute correct content.

How cool is that?
That's what we think too!

Here's another cool fact for you.
The wiki starts as nothing. It's an empty shell.
As more and more content is added to it, the wiki grows.
There is virtually no limit to how big the wiki can grow.
There is virtually no limit to what the wiki can do for you.

Paula wrote an excellent here: http://www.912registry.org/enews/2007/03/912-registry-wiki.htm

If it all doesn't make sense yet - don't worry - it will very soon.
Read her article and then go play on the wiki.

912 Registry Wiki

An exciting new resource is now available exclusively to 912 Registry members! With the generosity and hard work of Dave Hillman we now have a new 912 Wiki.

If you're not familiar with a Wiki, it is a website that allows users to add, remove, edit and change content. It is very different from a BBS format in that it can be organized in a much more logical structure and can be broken down into individual articles on a wide variety of subjects. Users are then able to add to or modify existing content, plus they can add new structures creating greater levels of information and detail.

In addition to the individual articles, it is possible for users to comment on the article using “Discussions” to flush out improvements, corrections or new ideas, and then ultimately incorporate the changes into the article. All the blather leading up to improvements won't clog up the article as it does on the BBS.

While the 912BBS contains a wealth of technical information and techniques, it is scattered and sprinkled with a lot of redundancy, wrong information, and non-information (As Dave put it, "A low signal-to-noise ratio"). The Wiki is a way to consolidate all the various bits of information into a logical, orderly and ever improving source of 912 information. It’s much more like a dynamic, on-line book than a random collection of threads.

A simple example of where the Wiki is superior would be to take a look at the 912BBS Technical Discussions >>912 Help and you will find "Essential 912 manuals and guides (Sterling's picks)". The only way to keep this information readily visible on the BBS is for Dave to "pin" the topic. There is lots of information that could benefit from the same treatment but then the BBS becomes cluttered and eventually unmanageable with pages of pinned topics. Instead the Wiki provides the users with a Table of Contents (or Topic Tree) and you go from there.

And another example, are you tired of repeatedly answering the same question over, and over, and over, and over, and over. It's been answered 100 times on the BBS but try to find it, and then distill the essence from all the other chatter attached to the post. With the Wiki, just point people to the Topic Tree. If in the process of working problems based on info in the Wiki, additional insight or clarification is gained, the Wiki can be updated to include the most recent discoveries.

When you view any Wiki page you will find [edit] buttons next to every section, even the Topic Tree. There is also an "Edit" tab at the top of every page. You can add and modify as you see fit. You can also use “Edit” tab to look at Wiki page to see how the formatting was handled and you can use that as a template for adding your own pages. If the formatting is beyond your abilities, don’t worry. Just click on “Edit”, type in your text, and leave a note asking for someone else to pretty it up. This is something we will all build working together.

How do I get to the 912 Wiki?

Log into 912BBS and then from the toolbar go to Control Panel >> Edit Profile. Add your 912 Registry membership number in the field provided and "Submit" the change. After you do that you will see a new "wiki" button on the far right side 912 BBS toolbar. Click it and it will take you there. You may be prompted for your user ID and membership number again, just enter those once and you are good to go.

If you want to get started but you're not sure how, click on "Help" found on the top toolbar. From there you can find out about pretty much everything on creating and editing a Wiki. You can also ask Dave or myself and we'll do our best to get you pointed in the right direction.

The 912 Registry will always be a dynamic” work in progress”, growing in content, accuracy and value as members continue to contribute. At the moment there are many areas that that are just waiting for someone to begin. We created the initial Topic Tree and begun filling in content, but it really is an open book just waiting for everyone to pitch in to create something truly unique and valuable to all 912 Registry Members.

Let's harness the power and knowledge of our community for the benefit of all 912 Registry Members.
