News and information from the 912 Registry

President's Report

You may not know it.

You can't feel it.

And if somebody didn't tell you about it, you might still not know it.

What is this "it" you ask?

It's all about some very Big Changes within the club.

Let's start out with the biggest and brightest star of our future -It's the WIKI!

"The wiki? I've never heard of a wiki..."

What is a wiki you ask?
Well, it's not some sort of Island Party - nice try.

  • It's a way for the collective masses (our membership) to share technical information.
  • It's a way for the collective masses to add technical information.
  • It's a way for the collective masses to also access quality, up to date technical information.
Where is this wiki?
It's really easy to find.
  1. Just go to the 912bbs.org and log in,
  2. Go to your "Control Panel" and "edit your profile"
  3. Add your membership number to your profile.
  4. Now click on the button on the upper right labeled wiki.
  5. Now you'll need to enter your login and password for the wiki (they are the same as your bbs login and password)
  6. Now your in!

Let's look at what the wiki can do from 3 examples.

Example #1: (the User)

Let's say your working on your 67 912.

It's late Friday night and you are getting ready for the club drive tomorrow.
You happen to be adjusting the float level on your solex carbs for the first time.
You started out thinking you had all the right tools, the workshop manual and so on.

Suddenly you realize your having problems.
The level doesn't stay where you set it.
You keep trying and trying.
It's too late to ask anyone on the bbs. It's too late to call your buddy in Kansas.
You really need to make it to the drive tomorrow.
What do you do?

Go to the wiki!
The wiki has the exact answer you need.

"If the level deviates, first check the float, float adjustment swivel, and the float needle valves to be sure they are working correctly. If those items are working correctly, adjust the float level by resetting the the externally located float level adjustment screw."
Example #2: (the Contributor)

Being technically minded as you are, you go to the wiki and search for the proper way to adjust your generator. You may have done this procedure 100 times. You know how to do it and have developed a systematic approach that ensures the correct tension on the belt.

Doing a simple search on the wiki turns up that the article is not there!
No problem.
You detail your procedure and upload it to the wiki.
You can add pictures, diagrams, and links to other wiki pages or external links.

Now, every member can benefit from your expertise.
You've helped the club and the 912 community to be a better place.
Kudos to you!

Example #3: (the Editor)

You happen to be searching the wiki for a technical procedure.
You find the article you were looking for and in reading it you find a couple of grammatical errors, spelling errors, and a reference to a tool that doesn't exist anymore.

As a matter of fact, the tool has been replaced by an even better tool that does a much better job.

Every page on the wiki can be edited by every member regardless of who created that page.
Read that again.

That means an obsolete article can be "fixed" and updated at any time, by anybody, to provide constant up to the minute correct content.

How cool is that?
That's what we think too!

Here's another cool fact for you.
The wiki starts as nothing. It's an empty shell.
As more and more content is added to it, the wiki grows.
There is virtually no limit to how big the wiki can grow.
There is virtually no limit to what the wiki can do for you.

Paula wrote an excellent here: http://www.912registry.org/enews/2007/03/912-registry-wiki.htm

If it all doesn't make sense yet - don't worry - it will very soon.
Read her article and then go play on the wiki.

912 Registry Wiki

An exciting new resource is now available exclusively to 912 Registry members! With the generosity and hard work of Dave Hillman we now have a new 912 Wiki.

If you're not familiar with a Wiki, it is a website that allows users to add, remove, edit and change content. It is very different from a BBS format in that it can be organized in a much more logical structure and can be broken down into individual articles on a wide variety of subjects. Users are then able to add to or modify existing content, plus they can add new structures creating greater levels of information and detail.

In addition to the individual articles, it is possible for users to comment on the article using “Discussions” to flush out improvements, corrections or new ideas, and then ultimately incorporate the changes into the article. All the blather leading up to improvements won't clog up the article as it does on the BBS.

While the 912BBS contains a wealth of technical information and techniques, it is scattered and sprinkled with a lot of redundancy, wrong information, and non-information (As Dave put it, "A low signal-to-noise ratio"). The Wiki is a way to consolidate all the various bits of information into a logical, orderly and ever improving source of 912 information. It’s much more like a dynamic, on-line book than a random collection of threads.

A simple example of where the Wiki is superior would be to take a look at the 912BBS Technical Discussions >>912 Help and you will find "Essential 912 manuals and guides (Sterling's picks)". The only way to keep this information readily visible on the BBS is for Dave to "pin" the topic. There is lots of information that could benefit from the same treatment but then the BBS becomes cluttered and eventually unmanageable with pages of pinned topics. Instead the Wiki provides the users with a Table of Contents (or Topic Tree) and you go from there.

And another example, are you tired of repeatedly answering the same question over, and over, and over, and over, and over. It's been answered 100 times on the BBS but try to find it, and then distill the essence from all the other chatter attached to the post. With the Wiki, just point people to the Topic Tree. If in the process of working problems based on info in the Wiki, additional insight or clarification is gained, the Wiki can be updated to include the most recent discoveries.

When you view any Wiki page you will find [edit] buttons next to every section, even the Topic Tree. There is also an "Edit" tab at the top of every page. You can add and modify as you see fit. You can also use “Edit” tab to look at Wiki page to see how the formatting was handled and you can use that as a template for adding your own pages. If the formatting is beyond your abilities, don’t worry. Just click on “Edit”, type in your text, and leave a note asking for someone else to pretty it up. This is something we will all build working together.

How do I get to the 912 Wiki?

Log into 912BBS and then from the toolbar go to Control Panel >> Edit Profile. Add your 912 Registry membership number in the field provided and "Submit" the change. After you do that you will see a new "wiki" button on the far right side 912 BBS toolbar. Click it and it will take you there. You may be prompted for your user ID and membership number again, just enter those once and you are good to go.

If you want to get started but you're not sure how, click on "Help" found on the top toolbar. From there you can find out about pretty much everything on creating and editing a Wiki. You can also ask Dave or myself and we'll do our best to get you pointed in the right direction.

The 912 Registry will always be a dynamic” work in progress”, growing in content, accuracy and value as members continue to contribute. At the moment there are many areas that that are just waiting for someone to begin. We created the initial Topic Tree and begun filling in content, but it really is an open book just waiting for everyone to pitch in to create something truly unique and valuable to all 912 Registry Members.

Let's harness the power and knowledge of our community for the benefit of all 912 Registry Members.

President's Report

I'm very interested in what you think.

This new style of E-Newsletter has a few advantages the old .pdf style did not.

On the production side:
The old style needed someone in particular to gather all the articles and information. Then that person needed to adjust the font styles and sizes to fit into the boxes each article needed to. Then add colors, photographs, pictures, and links. This portion was done in M/S Publisher and once the layout was complete, the file needed to be converted to Adobe Acrobat. It was also important that the version of Acrobat was held low enough to match the versions of the readers.
Finally, the Acrobat file (.pdf) was uploaded to the server. The monthly email went out to all paid members, pointing them to the .pdf to download.

There's a good deal of time and effort to do this. But that's not why we are switching.
The process detailed above requires 3 expensive and detailed programs to do correctly.

In everything we as a Board of Directors consider, we look at the long term consequences.
One persons ability to create or produce something of value to the club is great, but what happens when that person can no longer continue? It does no good to have to be constantly re-inventing the wheel.

The idea of "Perpetuity" relates to finances but also to most anything we do is this club.
If we can create something of value, and make it so that at anytime anyone else can step in and continue on, then that is indeed a thing of value.

On the member's side:
I have talked to many members about the E-newsletter.
While the information stream was generally thought of as great, the delivery was the most criticized. Having to download a file to read it is counter productive.

Assuming the reader has the correct software, they would have to access their email first, then click on the correct link to download the file. Once the file was downloaded, it could then finally be read.

When we send out the mass email announcing the E-Newsletter we can track how many open the email, how many follow a link, and how many download the file.
Using last month's mailer as an example, we had current membership totaling 621.

Of those:
  • Only 533 had an email address
  • 19 of those bounced for one reason or another
  • 341 were opened and read
  • 14 clicked on the links to the Events Calendar
  • 6 clicked on the link to the 912bbs.org (perhaps discovering it for the first time)
  • 1 person clicked on the link to 912Registry.org (first time again?)
  • 15 members clicked to renew their membership
  • 17 needed to download Acrobat from the link
  • and ONLY 246 Members downloaded the E-Newsletter
That means ultimately we are connecting with only 40% of our membership!
That's not good enough.

This new web based E-Newsletter should change all that.
To read it you need only a web browser.
No software, no downloads, simple as can be.

At the same time it also offers the reader items that we didn't have before.

"All Porsche" Weekend

We are so blessed to live in Southern California. The weather is mild, yet we can start the day in the surf and end on the slopes. There is so much to do here and it is all at our fingertips. All this sun and fun helps us enjoy the vintage car hobby and as such, we can drive our cars all year long. This time of year, we start to look forward to our all Porsche weekend, March 8th – 11th. There is so much to see and do relating to our beloved Porsche’s, that folks converge on Southern California from all over the world! Our 912 Registry has taken on a huge roll in this year’s celebration.

Much is happening during this March weekend. Along with the LA Lit and Toy Show and the “All Porsche” event the following day, several Porsche restoration shops are having open houses. West Coast Haus in Huntington Beach kicks the weekend of with an open house that starts on Thursday, March 8th and continues into the next day. On Friday, March 9th, Willhoit Auto Restorations in Long Beach, The Parts Shop in Huntington Beach and GTwerk in Los Alamitos will also be hosting open houses. These open houses are very near to each other and it will be easy to get to them all in a day!

Of course, we’ll all be taking in the LA Lit and Toy Show early Saturday morning. This event runs from 7:30 AM until 2:00 PM and is the cornerstone of the weekend. It’s amazing to see it and be a part of it. There’s something about walking between the tables of Porsche parts and memorabilia and bumping into living Porsche legends that makes this event special. For more information check out the website: www.lalitandtoyshow.com and join in the fun!

After the Lit and Toy Show on Saturday, European Collectible’s in Costa Mesa is hosting an open house from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. This is open to all in the Porsche community. Owner, Nick Clemence and sales manager, Chris Casler are putting together an awesome evening that will feature some grazing and three special guest speakers. Tony Adamawitz, Scooter Patrick and Davy Jordan have agreed to come and speak about racing early 911’s in the Trans Am during the late ‘60s. These guys will tell us a few stories in an interview format that is sure to entertain any Porsche nut. This will be a great place to meet up with your Porsche pals and head out to dinner in the Newport Beach area afterwards.

For those of you wanting to stay down in the Costa Mesa area for the “All Porsche” event Sunday, we have arranged some more hotel rooms. Both are Holiday Inn Express’. The first is in Newport Beach and their number is 949-722-2999. The second is in Costa Mesa and their number is 949-631-6000. The deadline for the rate is February 9th, so please book early to insure availability.

Finally, Sunday March 11th, the Porsche world will converge on the So Cal All Porsche Swap Meet and Car Display. The Porsche 356 Club and 912 Registry are co-sponsoring this event. It will be held right next door to European Collectible’s at 1645 Babcock in the city of Costa Mesa. Gates will open at 8:00 AM and close at 3:00 PM. Breakfast and lunch will be available, so plan to spend the day. So far, Stoddard’s, Classic and Speed Parts, Benton Engineering, NLA, LN Engineering, Hollywood Speedometer, Toad Hall, Motor Books, 9 Magazine, International Mercantile and many more have committed to attend. These vendors, more then 75 folks already committed to swap and hundreds of Porsche’s on display will make for an interesting day.

So, plan to spend the whole weekend in Southern California. Make sure you hit all the events you have just read about and we’ll look forward to seeing you on Sunday March 11th for the So Cal All Porsche Swap Meet and Car Display. Bring your Porsche and park with your brothers and sisters in the passion. We have room for 400 cars to park on site! We will be supporting a children’s charity, Technology for Kids Foundation and all of the proceeds will go to them. For more information contact Jeff Trask at NO911NV@aol.com or 949-697-4499 or Pete McNulty at pmcnulty98@aol.com or 949-400-9319. Let us know how you want to be involved!

Bruce's View

Well folks, we are now well into the new year. What we end up doing as a group the rest of the year will determined by what we do as individuals - the 912 Registry is what WE make it.

I am always encouraged to see new, or prospective, members and the enthusiasm they show when they first latch on to this motley group with there funny little old German cars. I still remember the first function I attended and how excited I was to see other cars just like mine, and then was so pleasantly surprised by the kind of folks I met that owned them. At that moment I became the "new blood" of the Registry. The infusion of this "new blood" into our group is what will guarantee the future and longevity of our Registry. I tend to be susceptible to the "I like things the way they are" mindset, but have come to realize that there is really no such thing... we either move ahead by reaching out for new members and make it fun for them, or we will wither away. There is no such thing as "keeping things as they are" in a club like this. I realized that this "new blood" is what I like about "the way things are!"

Let us not fall into feeling that because we may be involved in one capacity that we can't be of value or use in another. We all can contribute in any aspect of the Registry. When I was the "Gear Guy" I was always happy to get suggestions and input from members. This told me that they care about what we do and want to contribute. Organize a small breakfast or drive with a few other folks in your area. Email someone on the Board and get a handful of flyers to keep in your car to hand out when someone stops you to ask about the car. More often than you think they just may be thinking about getting one - so you could be the one that helps them make the plunge. Get involved - we need the "new blood" to keep the old blood flowing!!

From The Right Side...

When Mike Mueller recently asked me to contribute a monthly column to the 912 E-newsletter, I was both honored and concerned. He wanted articles coming from us 912ers in the east. An effort to solicit opinions and announce happenings on this side of the country is a true and noble effort. Simple enough, I thought. But herein resides the problem.

What is considered the “east”? For some, anything east of Sacramento is the east. For others the line is either the Rocky Mountains, or the Mississippi River. Yet others do not care as long as it is not near Texas. As we found out very clearly when initially discussing the 2007 Northeast Rendezvous, the east certainly does not begin on the eastern shore of the Connecticut River.

Then I thought, maybe I should approach this as time-zone specific. If four zones are good enough for our country in general, it should be good enough for me. But, I know that doesn’t work for all of you shy 912 owners. So, to avoid getting e-mail on this subject, and for the purpose of this column, “east” will mean whatever you want it to mean. New England, the entire Atlantic coast, the Adirondacks, the Ohio Valley, East L.A., whatever. And, if as time passes you feel your area is under-represented, please let me know. We want everyone to be happy, even those on the Big Island of Hawaii (which is, of course, east of Maui).

On the subject of the 2007 Northeast 912 Rendezvous, we had a number of false starts. Issues centered on having it either too close to the “other” Rendezvous (you know, the one on the west coast), or having it too late in the season. Other objections such as conflicts with religious holidays and school vacations were also noted. All of these constraints caused us to question if it was at all feasible. If we could decide on the “when”, we still needed to nail down the “where”. As we approach the foliage season, rooms and resorts become impossible to afford, or even find.

Well, I can now say both areas are closer to being addressed! The location will be the Race Brook Lodge (not a bad name for Porsche people) in Sheffield, MA. This location is in the Berkshire Mountains on the Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York border. (See: http://www.rblodge.com/) The dates are September 6 – 9, 2007 – we think. Further details will be forthcoming.

Meetings in the southeast and central states are also in the planning stages and you should check out the 912 Calendar for dates. More information will be included here each month, as well.

Other suggestions for this year include: German Car Day at the Museum of Transportation; Tech Sessions; Motoring Mystery Trip; Mt. Sunapee Car Show; Drive-In/ Cruise Night; 912 Mt. Monadnock Run; A Day At the Races; the 912 Rolling Picnic; an Amish Country tour; Porsches along the Potomac; a Foliage Run and a Halloween Rally. There will be many more events in the various regions throughout the year, I am sure.

While I am not sure exactly where the dividing line is – that is it for this month “From the Right Side”.

912 Registry Monthly Events

Check the 912 Registry Events Calendar for up-to-date information on these and many more events including, breakfast gatherings, drives, BBQs, track & autocross days, and more.

The only problem is so far only 912 Registry members in Southern California have placed any events on the calendar. How about everyone else out there? If you don’t want to be left wondering why there are no events in your area, start planning yourself and get them on the calendar.

The most important thing to remember about all 912 gatherings is that they are organized by 912 Registry members just like you. There is no big, paid professional staff that organizes these activities. It’s all done by 912 owners who want to bring others together to share our great cars and enjoy the company of all those who appreciate them. Without YOU, there would be no 912 events.

The rules for “organizing” a 912 event are pretty simple:

1) A “912 Event” doesn’t need to be just for 912s. Any excuse to get a handful of 912s (or even just the people who love them) together is good enough to put on the calendar.

2) Posting an event on the 912 BBS is a start but that doesn’t begin to reach all the potential participants out there. This newsletter reaches as many as 5 times the number of people who regularly visit the BBS. Please place your event ideas on the 912 Event Calendar, or if you need help, email them to events@912registry.org and we'll help you get the word out.

Remember, you can be sure that 1) IF NO ONE PLAN’S IT, IT WON’T HAPPEN, and 2) IF YOU DON'T TELL PEOPLE YOU PLANNED IT, THEY WON'T SHOW UP.

Southern CA Events

February 2007

Each month the Southern California region holds a breakfast, typically at one of four locations throughout the area. For this February a new location has been added. Check out Rikki and Ronnie's in Torrance for more details.

March 2007

March is shaping up to be a jam-packed month of 912 activities in the area. Here's what's on tap so far.

Peet's Coffee in Pasadena.

These next 3 events are all part of a grand weekend built around the new All Porsche Car Display and Swap Meet. In the tradition of the original Parts Obsolete and Dunkel All Porsche swap meets, the 356 Club and 912 Registry present the So Cal All Porsche Swap and Car Display. Porsche owners from all over the world will be in town, and this event held in Costa Mesa will be the place to end a glorious weekend of Porsche related events.

LA Porsche Literature Show
European Collectables Open House
All Porsche Display & Swap Meet

Then bring your Irish Green 912 (other colors tolerated) to the 6th Annual 356/912 St. Patrick's Day Drive

And finally for those who just can't shake that need for speed there is the 2nd 912s at Streets of Willow

For a full and up-to-date listing of all events, make sure you check out 912 Registry Calendar frequently for details, additions and changes.

Competition Notes

Many of us had a great time driving autocrosses in 2006, but the real jewel was the track day that Jeff Trask and Zeke Duge organized at The Streets of Willow. We all had as much track time as we wanted and everyone seemed to learn a lot and have a great time. This was not a 912Registry event but about thirty 912s participated. Jeff and Zeke are planning another event for March so look for information on the event calendar.

The 2007 autocross season is beginning and there are events everywhere for those interested in participating. PCA and SCCA run great programs and their schedules are available at pca.org and scca.org. Go to the region you live in and check the events schedule for information. Both organizations have their good points, but I prefer PCA autocrosses because participants get more track time.

If you are in Southern California the PCA Orange Coast Region and PCA San Diego Region have great autocross programs and a full schedule is available at www.pcaocr.org and www.pcasdr.org. I plan on running several Orange Coast and San Diego events this year and hope to…

See you at the track!
