How about we start a writing campaign now supporting a new 912
Turbo® Porsche®
?
In light of environmental
considerations, high fuel costs, and new technology (i.e. USA requiring
a fleet average of 35.5 mpg by 2016), the Factory could produce a
next-generation 912 with new-technology alternative engine.
A November
2010 report from Car and Driver's Jens Meiners indicates
Porsche® is developing "a turbocharged flat-four derived from the current Boxster flat-six" and along with the 2012 911, internally being called
the 991; and
C&D says " If the market demands a fuel-economy champ—or one is
needed—Porsche® also could install a turbocharged flat-four essentially
identical to the one soon to be found in the Boxster. (If such a model
happened, would it be called the 912?) ".
Then in January 2011
Automobile Magazine reported two prototype engines, the
first "1.9 liters, a turbocharger, and 210 horsepower with 215
pound-feet of torque" and the second "turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four
(presumably water-cooled) is good for around 360 horsepower."
Also in January 2011, Toby Hagon of
Austrailia's The Age reported that outgoing Porsche
research and development boss Wolfgang Durheimer confirmed a
horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine was in development, the
four-cylinder would use between 8 and 12 per cent less fuel than the
current six-cylinder models, and although the four-cylinder was not yet
slated for use in the iconic 911 but he didn’t rule it out.
Durheimer was quoted “I think four-cylinder boxer engine in a Porsche
sports car is viable as long as the performance level does not suffer.
If you are talking about performance you need a turbo,” he says.
Car
and Driver's Jens Meiners reported in March 2011 "As usual, the next
[2013] 911 line will spawn spin-offs like few other cars on the
road......... Porsche® will offer a hybrid and might even add a
turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the portfolio."
Perhaps
we'll be seeing a new 912 Turbo (AKA 992?) with more HP than the
original 930?

Aric Gless and Barwaut Verhoeven
have done fantastic work for the 912 community.
Aric and Barwaut are finding 912s from multiple sources, including
smog testing records, for sales information such as eBay, even
dismantling yards. For example, Aric has accounted over 1200 912Es so
far. And Barwaut has automated the process for realtime updates.
912registry.org has always logged in 912s when owners join on their
own. This is why the owners' names appear. After 13 years, this
amounts to about 3000 owners from all years. Of this total, about 500
cars are 912Es, while Aric has found 1200 on his own! At the 912
Registry we regularly receive inquiries from people looking for their
old car or the history of their current car. So the search also
includes previous owners, and opportunities for past and present owners
to communicate. What would also be fantastic is if 912 fans who are
especially interested in a specialized 912 information join in the
hunt. For example a particular year ('65, '66, '67, '68, '69, '76) or
style (sunroof coupe, soft window Targa, race car, etc.) or special
order (custom colors, accessories, etc. ). Who's interested in
volunteering to search and
add to the database?

article The Quest for the Perfect Porsche and How It Ruined My Life
about his pursuit to find a great 912E "quickly devolved into an
all-consuming odyssey."

Congratulations to 912 Registry Member Steve Torkelsen
of Wilton, Connecticut! As part of the 60 Years in America
Celebration, Porsche® encouraged owners of cars spanning 12 model ranges
to enter their cars for a shot at earning the ‘oldest’ designation
originally delivered to America for their respective car model.
Steve's was found to be the earliest known 912 delivered to America. Steve
writes "In early 1965, my uncle ordered a 356. When 356 production
ended, he was asked to switch the order to a 912. So this early 912 has
a 3-gauge, yellow-painted dashboard in the 356 tradition. He took
delivery during an extended family tour of Europe (June 1965). I was
there too, aged 2-1/2." A photo gallery of the Steve's and other model
Porsches® and car details can be viewed at

Congratulations to Registry Member Jay Aldeguer "Just
wanted to let you know that Esquire did feature my orange 912.
I'd like to say "thank you" for including my 912 together with the
bunch of photos you sent to the magazine. Getting featured on their
annual Black Book [Fall 2010] is a great deal for me and my
family. Thanks much. Please extend my appreciation to the rest of the
members and directors of the 912 club. I've attached a scanned copy of
the feature. Best Regards, Jay"

We have a
new companion
page to the existing VIN Table, that
provides quick links to the Owners Pages by
912/912E model year, body style, &
assembly factory. Concurrently, we are splitting the
legacy Owners Pages to clarify the VIN sequences and reduce page sizes.
Give it a test drive by clicking this button.

Also updated is the Vehicle Identification Number page
which shows both model year and calendar year splits. Now included
are approximate VIN
sequence splits for 1966 model Karmann and Porsche® coupes constructed in 1965. These
splits are based on the earliest 912 Registry-listed
cars having 1966 paint codes. (Note
that some 1966 and later model year cars exist with 1964/65 paint codes, as the
earlier
356/911/912 colors could be special ordered for
later cars.)
The Paint Code page has been
updated, but there's still a ways to go
finding and displaying all the special color cars '65-'76. If you have a
912 with a rare original exterior color that is not yet pictured, please
send a photo!
Has your contact information changed? If so
please send us an update when you get an opportunity.

Classics Monthly magazine published an article about the 912 in
their June 2010 issue.
Rick Horvath's 912E "Fudge" was featured in the May 2010 of
Classic &
Sports Car Magazine, in a comparison with a Lancia Monte Carlo.
C&S and the editor, Martin Buckley, was rather impressed with his 912E!
The May 2010 (Issue 61) of Total 911 magazine includes
an article: "Complete
Guide to the 912 – the car that was a 911 in all but its
engine and is now a sought-after classic."
The
New York Times has taken note of 912s in their Collector Cars List ,
making reference to a concours 912 SWT sold at auction for $39,500.
