Rich Lambert has been researching the early 912 racers....

From: Rich Lambert; red912@acmenet.com; Hi Rick, The following are some combined e-mails I received from Ron Cummings, who was there in the 60's...Check out the web page Ron talks about! Rich
------------------------

Rich,

I thought you 912 folks might like reading Pat Tobin's story on racing speedsters in the Los Angeles area.

You can get there by going to http://www.speedsters.com then, from their home page, click on information center then click on speedster racing in the 60s. Also, they have a lot of information that might be of interest to 912 owners. Things like manuals that are on the market.

Dick lovell is mentioned as well as his 912 driver Denny Harrison. Denny usually raced with number 49, the same number he used on the Lovell 912. So far as I can find Lovell's 912 was driven, by Denny, in four weekends of racing resulting in two Sunday race wins and possibly two dnfs.

My friend, Dale Hersh, is not mentioned but our car was sponsored by Roger Bursch's Scientific automotive, usually number 19. Dale won the Pacific Coast Division E production championship in 1965 but blew up his motor at the Daytona run offs. I remember the fire that is mentioned in the article. I was standing in the pits. We knew Pat Tobin quite well.

In 1969 Floyd Clymer Publications published the Porsche 912 Handbook and Service Manual with assistance from Lee Price and Dick Lovell. On page D there is a short story and photo of Lovell's 912. Denny Harrison is sitting in the car with Denny's number 49 painted on racer. The story claims 4 wins and 2 second place finishes in 8 starts. This includes Saturday starts as well as Sunday races ( 4 actual events ). The car was sold after only a few races. We always thought it funny that Lovell
would consider Saturday's events in the story.

Lee Price was the mechanic that set up several other fairly successful 912's in the Los Angeles area, including a car sponsored by Justice Brothers automobile products. Price worked on everything from the mighty midgets to a 906 Porsche before giving it all up to become an independent big rig truck driver.

My friend, Dale Hersh, later raced this car as a 911 racer and won several SCCA races with it in C production. Dale sold the shell of this car in Dec. 1999 when he closed down his Porsche salvage yard.
My previous e:mail mentions Pat Tobin's internet story about racing Speedsters. He claims using 40 thousands over pistons in his car. If this is true his car would have been illegal. I think this was a mistake because I am sure Tobin did not cheat.

According to Dale Hersh, Dick Lovell was living in Monterey, California up to about 4 or 5 years ago. I did a "people search" on yahoo and came up with 5 Lovell's in Monterey but no Richards.
Ron Cummings

From: Rich Lambert;  red912@acmenet.com; Hi Rick, Have you seen the new issue of 911 & Porsche World magazine? There's an article on 912's. There's also a thing about rallying that mentions Zasada and... an article about racing in GB that's written by a guy with the same name as me...weird. Rich

From: Rich Lambert;  red912@acmenet.com; Hi Rick, Still trying to track down Dick Lovell....  Your note got me thinking about the 912 driver, Zasada. After about 50 web searches I came up with Sobieslaw Zasada, who still races in rallys.   There's a web page devoted to him, unfortunately it's all in Polish. The web page is at http://free.polbox.pl/z/zastawny/zasada/zasada.html   Although I don't read Polish, there is definately a reference to the Argentine Grand Prix and the European Rally Championship in 1967. I've expended this much energy on this, I'll try to get in touch with him.  Maybe he can give me some suspension tips! Rich

From: Rich Lambert;  red912@acmenet.com; Do you have the "Porsche 912 Handbook"? I have an old (1969) version that shows a good picture of Dick Lovell sitting in his 912 EP race car. There's also a short bio on his 912 racing career.   Apparently he was fairly successful racing a 912 back in the late 60's in California.  Rich
